When are you a Candidate for Varicose Vein Surgery?

Once the time has come when elevating your legs, wearing compression hose, changing your shoe wear, and exercising are no longer providing relief from the throbbing, swelling, and heaviness of your legs from varicose veins, it may be time to consider alternate treatments for varicose veins.

There are several treatment options available, like sclerotherapy, endovascular laser therapy (EVLT), and vein stripping surgery, but the first couple of questions that should be considered are choosing the right time for varicose vein surgery and if you are a candidate for surgery. What to consider when deciding on surgery:

Deciding to pursue vein surgery can be a hard decision to make, taking into consideration many different factors.  There are concerns for cost, time away from work, pain, recovery, and the results.  There are several reasons to know when it may be right to consider vein surgery.

Most common reason people have varicose vein surgery:

Perhaps the most common reason to know when the right time for vein surgery is, is when you suffer from daily symptoms that are affecting your quality of life.  This can mean that the pain, heaviness, and swelling in your legs, prevents you from enjoying activities outside of the home or completing your work tasks, despite using home treatments or home treatments no longer provide relief.

You may not be a candidate if:

Not everyone that has made the decision to consider varicose vein surgery will be able to have a procedure.

  • Certain medical conditions or use of certain medications may prevent you from being a candidate for vascular surgery.
  • If you are pregnant, you should use only conservative measures and may be a candidate after you deliver your baby.
  • If you are unable to walk or are confined to a bed or wheelchair, varicose vein surgery is not an option, as walking is a mainstay for treatment and recovery.
  • If you currently have a blood clot, you are likely not a candidate, however, it will depend upon the location of the clot.
  • If you are using any medication to thin your blood, such as Coumadin, Plavix, Apixiban, Xarleto, or Eliquis, you would not be a candidate for vein surgery, as these will increase bleeding risk during the procedure.
  • If you have problems with the arteries in your legs, such as poor circulation, this would also make you not a candidate for vein surgery.

Is varicose vein surgery right for you?

If your symptoms of varicose veins are a daily struggle, you have had secondary complications, such as drainage from your legs, ulcers, poor healing wounds, and skin infections, and you have failed home treatment, vein surgery may be the next best step for you. Even though there are specific medical conditions or medications that may prevent varicose vein surgery, speak with your board certified surgeon about your risk and medical history to determine if you can seek relief from your varicose veins with a surgery.
