Guide on How to Select a Vein Surgeon

You’ve decided that your varicose veins are painful, pesky, unsightly and you want a permanent solution.  Now that you’ve made the decision to have a varicose vein procedure, you must find the right vein surgeon.  There are several different steps to take in locating, researching, and meeting with a surgeon to find a qualified venous surgeon that is the right fit for you.

Understand the Specialities

First, it is important to be educated on the types of specialty physicians that are qualified and have the appropriate board certified training to perform procedural techniques for varicose veins.  Physicians that are board certified have received specialty residency training and passed examinations in the treatment of varicose veins.

These physicians will have a specialty in:

  • cardiothoracic surgery
  • vascular surgery
  • general surgery
  • interventional radiology
  • interventional cardiology

However, you should be aware that any physician is able to treat varicose veins, but they may not be board certified and may have only done a weekend long training program.

Being able to spot fraudulent vein clinics is important to prevent the possibility of having inappropriate treatment and complications that may result in long-term damage.

Ask for a Referral & Perform Online Research

In order to find a physician, you can ask family, friends, your primary doctor, or perform an internet search for clinics in and around your area.  Most clinics should have a website, which should also provide information on the physician and their credentials.  You can also do a search of the physician’s name to find information about credentials, past education, number of years in practice, and any history of malpractice or disciplinary actions, to ensure that the physician is in good standing with both state and federal medical laws, and that he is board certified.

Find out what Procedures the Surgeon Offers

Take your time in looking through the clinic’s or physician’s website to learn about the types of procedures that are offered.  Most credible vein clinics should offer multiple different procedures, such as vein stripping, sclerotherapy, and endovascular laser therapy with an ultrasound performed before and during the procedure. Often there is detailed information about these procedures with pictures and videos for information purposes.

Read Actual Patient Reviews

Once you have found several vein clinics, with board certified physicians, and the ability to perform several different vein techniques, you can then look at reviews from real patients, usually through other sites, such as google reviews, healthgrades, or survey vitals.  This may give more information from real patients as to their experience with this physician or vein clinic.  These reviews may help narrow the selection of physicians.

Assess Your Consultation with the Vein Surgeon

From your research, choose your top clinic or physician and make an appointment for a consultation.  At your consultation it is important to see how the physician makes you feel in terms of comfort and ability to perform the procedure.

During the visit, keep in mind how thorough the history and examination are, as well as, the explanation of procedures.  You should feel free to ask plenty of questions until you are comfortable about the procedure and what the procedure entails.  Even after having one consultation, having a second opinion is a great idea from another clinic or physician.

See how their assessment of your veins compare, in that they recommend the same or similar procedure.  A clinic or physician should never be offended of your desire for a second opinion.  After all, you wouldn’t buy the first car or house you see, but would want to consider several options!
