What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy refers to the process of injecting a medical solution into varicose and spider veins, causing them to clot and swell shut. Blood flow is then redirected, and the veins are removed by the body naturally over time.

Depending on the individual condition, one of the following techniques may be used:
  • Conventional Sclerotherapy: This is the most basic form of Sclerotherapy and involves direct injections of the solution into affected veins. A tiny needle is used and topical anesthetics are available for maximum patient comfort.
  • Foam Sclerotherapy – During this technique, small amounts of solution are mixed with air to create a foamy, cream-like substance. Foam Sclerotherapy is often used to treat underlying abnormal veins that are larger, as the solution covers more surface area.
  • Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy – For varicose veins that are difficult to see as well as large superficial veins, ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy can improve precision and accuracy where other techniques cannot. The ultrasound technology aids Dr. Almeida in locating and injecting the affected veins. After these deeper veins are treated, smaller reticular and spider veins can sometimes go away as well.

Which Sclerotherapy Treatment is Right for Me?

During your consultation, Dr. Almeida will evaluate your individual condition, medical and family history as well as personal preferences to determine which method of Sclerotherapy is best for your vascular needs. Your veins will be thoroughly evaluated and any underlying medical conditions will be ruled out before Sclerotherapy treatment is approved.

Depending on the severity of your condition, multiple treatments may be necessary in order to fully eradicate affected veins and achieve desired results.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective treatment that is clinically proven to be safe in most patients. Doctor Almeida may recommend a walking regimen in order to maintain good circulation as the solution works through the veins. The results are gradual, with veins being removed by the body over the course of several weeks.

Although Sclerotherapy removes treated veins permanently, varicose and spider veins can still recur in the future. Doctor Almeida will diagnose and treat your condition as accurately as possible to minimize the recurrence of these vascular conditions.

What is Foam Sclerotherapy?

While varicose veins and spider veins are often removed for cosmetic reasons, it is important to have these vascular conditions treated by a medical professional in order to rule out underlying medical conditions and to prevent damaged veins from redeveloping in the future.

Serving the greater Miami area in Southern Florida, Miami Vein Center offers Foam Sclerotherapy to remove visible and underlying varicose veins. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with board certified vascular surgeon Dr. Jose Almeida and find out if you are a candidate for Foam Sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy refers to the removal of spider and varicose veins by injecting a medicinal solution directly into the vessels. There are multiple techniques available to perform Sclerotherapy, but Foam Sclerotherapy has advantages that set it apart from other techniques.

While traditional Sclerotherapy involves a liquid solution, Foam Sclerotherapy uses a medical solution that is mixed with small volumes of air to create a cream-like consistency. Foam Sclerotherapy can:

  • Treat larger, underlying varicose veins with more accuracy than other Sclerotherapy techniques
  • Be used in smaller amounts while covering larger areas than conventional Sclerotherapy
  • Be seen with ultrasound technology due to its thick consistency, allowing Dr. Almeida to more accurately and precisely administer the treatment

What Can I Expect During Foam Sclerotherapy Treatment?

All Sclerotherapy procedures are done in-office at Miami Vein Center and typically only cause mild discomfort as the solution is being injected. Once the foam enters the veins, the solution damages the vessel lining, causing the veins to clot and eventually be removed naturally by the body. The blood flow is redirected, and the affected veins are removed permanently.

Foam Sclerotherapy is a quick treatment, often taking less than an hour with most patients being able to return to normal activities immediately afterward.

Am I a Good Candidate for Foam Sclerotherapy?

The technique that most directly benefits your vascular concerns may depend on your individual condition. During your consultation with Dr. Almeida, factors such as your health, medical history and vascular condition will be assessed to determine which method of Sclerotherapy is right for you.

Individuals who are pregnant or who have contraindicating vascular disorders may be advised to seek an alternative form of treatment. Doctor Almeida will recommend the best vein removal method for you based on your condition. You may have also heard of ultrasound guided procedures which are non-invasive and work welll.

What is Recovery Like?

Compression stockings may be issued after treatment in order to help maintain normal circulation processes during healing. It may take the body several weeks to remove treated veins, and Dr. Almeida will advise you of any post-treatment instructions you may need to maximize results.

What is Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy?

In the past, varicose and spider veins were mostly removed using extensive surgery. Advances in vascular medicine now offer several options, including ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy. At Miami Vein Center, our ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that offers increased precision in treating veins that are large or difficult to find.

While conventional Sclerotherapy involves directly injecting affected veins with medical solution, in some cases varicose veins are either too deep or too large to treat with this method alone. Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy utilizes advanced ultrasound technology to accurately detect underlying veins that put pressure on other, more visible veins.

Once the affected vein has been detected, Dr. Almeida can monitor the safe and effective injection of the medical solution. This damages the walls of the vein, causing them to stick together and clot. The blood flow is redirected, and over time the treated vein is removed naturally by the body.

A liquid solution is often used, but in some cases the solution may be turned into foam in order to cover more surface area inside of the vein. Depending on the severity of the vein, multiple injections may be necessary in order to achieve desired results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy?

During your consultation with Dr. Almeida, factors such as your general health, medical and family history, and individual condition will be evaluated to determine if ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy is right for you. Prior to treatment, your vascular condition will be thoroughly evaluated to ensure that there are no underlying medical concerns that need to be addressed.

Is There Any Recovery Time?

Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure that is clinically proven to alleviate symptoms with minimal recovery time. Any residual discomfort is usually controlled with pain medication, and most patients return to normal activities within a week or so.

Sclerotherapy is a gradual process, with most veins being completely removed after several weeks. Although these varicose veins are removed permanently, there is still a chance that they will recur in the future.

Eliminating deep veins reduces the chance that superficial varicose and spider veins will develop, and with regular vascular screenings your condition can be monitored over time.
