Pelvic congestion syndrome is a chronic medical condition that causes pain in the lower torso. The sensation can range from a dull twinge to a sharp or throbbing spasm. For some women, the pain can be debilitating. These pangs typically worsen over the course of the day and are relieved by lying down. Other symptoms may include lower back and leg pain, watery discharge from the vagina and exhaustion, as well as mood swings and abdominal bloating. It is estimated that approximately one-third of all women will experience chronic pelvic pain at some point during their lives. Risk factors include being of childbearing age, multiple pregnancies, a hormonal dysfunction and polycystic ovaries.
While there are several potential reasons for pelvic pain, the condition is easier to diagnose when a woman also has pelvic or ovarian varicose veins. Similar to varicose veins in the legs, the valves that help to control the flow of blood back to the heart become weakened and do not function properly. This dysfunction enables blood to flow backward and pool in the veins.
The pain and other symptoms occur when the fluid causes the blood vessels to bulge. Lying down reduces the pressure and distension. Because women lie down during a pelvic exam, it is difficult to diagnose the condition. Pelvic congestion syndrome is usually diagnosed with the assistance of an MRI, a pelvic ultrasound or pelvic venography.
If varicose veins are confirmed, the condition can usually be treated using minimally-invasive catheter techniques. During this type of procedure, a thin catheter is guided to the varicose vein. The veins are then blocked with a natural substance. If required, sclerotherapy may be used to shrink the vein. Pain subsides when the pressure is reduced or the vein is blocked.
