Are these Non-Surgical Varicose Vein Remedies medically sound?
Discovery
A popular YouTube video by Dr. Axe claims the following home remedies can help you get rid of varicose veins. Here is our thoughts on these claims and a few of our own ideas.
1. Plant-Based Products like Tomatoes on the Varicose Veins
First, I do not know if you can believe this but, they actually say to Slice the green tomatoes and red tomatoes and place them on the veins several times a day.
The basis for their argument about placing the tomatoes on your skin is that the Tomato posses flavonoid. Flavenoids have been medically proven to be powerful antioxidants, anticoagulant and they also provide anti-inflammatory effects in your body.
The only problem with their claim is that no medical proof putting the tomatoes on your legs will do anything.
One medical cream that is commonly used by the medical community is Dermaka. This cream is a plant-based cream enriched with vitamins that have been successful in reducing inflammation and bruising, after invasive procedures that cause bruising and swelling of your skin.
Other than this local solution, we find that Flavinoids, which are found in fruits, not just tomatoes, have to be ingested to provide a medical benefit to anyone.
2. Essential oils rubbed on your legs
Essential oils rubbed on your legs such as Cypress oil will get rid of varicose vein and or spider veins by increasing your circulation is another claim by YouTube video personalities. There is no Medical Science available to back this claim up.
What we do know is that spider veins, as well as varicose veins, are veins that are enlarged or formed because the valves of the veins are not working correctly and the blood is not able to flow back to the heart, as the blood pools, the veins get enlarged. Our medical community has found that the only practical way of treating varicose veins or spider veins is to remove or seal the faulty veins that are causing these unsightly blemishes on your legs.
Witch hazel is another topical solution mentioned on YouTube, that has no clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness, but it seems to be effective in killing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and tightening skin proteins. But it is very doubtful that it will remove veins permanently.
3. Exercise
Exercise is a claim made on YouTube videos, that have been proven to be true. Exercise keeps your weight down, strengthening your muscles, as well as a myriad of health benefits. So yes, please exercise and eat healthily. A healthy weight and lifestyle will prevent or delay the formation of unsightly veins, as well as keeping your circulation healthy.
4. Compression Stockings
Wearing medical grade compression stockings is Medically Proven to aid in delaying or preventing the formation of unsightly veins, but stockings aid in the relief of symptoms caused by vein disease.
Helps and Is medically Medical Grade compression stockings provide pressure to the surface arteries and veins. This pressure supports healthy blood circulation in your legs by assisting the vein valves to function correctly and gets the blood back to your heart without obstructions.
5. Consume more antioxidant-rich foods / High fiber foods
Claims: this seems to be true! Consuming Flavenoid is excellent for your leg health. Flavenoids work on the veins walls by avoiding inflammatory damage on the vein walls that lead to swelling and leg pain. Antioxidants found in bilberry extract, Horse chestnut, and Blueberries: contain resveratrol and bioflavonoids.
The FDA - has approved Vasculera. Vasculera includes Flavonoids (γ-benzopyrones)- which are potent antioxidants that aid in cell function found in plants that reduce swelling and aids in cell regeneration. Another dietary supplement developed by a vascular surgeon is Vein Formula.
6. Consume collagen & bone broth
Claim: drinking 8oz of bone broth daily to support collagen in your connective tissue will get rid of varicose veins. This may be true, but we have no medical support or science to support this claim. But we do know that you will need medical intervention to remove the current spider or varicose veins you may have. The bone broth won't take the spider or varicose veins away.
7. Platelet-rich plasma
Claims: We do not have any medical proof to support that the veins can heal and diminish. Hopefully, this will be proven in the future.
8. Avoid Certain Foods
Do Avoid Trans Fats, Sugar, Caffeine, Alcohol, Processed Foods. This will help with your all-around health and well being.
