If you experience protruding or varicose veins in the lower legs, you may have heard of cases where the veins rupture or “pop,” causing sudden bleeding, especially after showering. At Miami Vein Center, we commonly treat cases of sudden bleeding from the legs and educate our patients on how to improve their circulation so this situation does not happen again in the future.

Miami Vein Center is South Florida’s premier destination for endovascular venous surgery and is led by renowned board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Jose Almeida. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and find out more information about how we treat and prevent sudden bleeding from the legs.

What Causes Sudden Bleeding from the Legs?

Vein Disease is a condition that causes pressure to build up in the veins over time. As part of the body’s normal circulatory process, blood flows from the legs back up to the heart against gravity. In men and women who have venous deficiencies such as “leaky” or incompetent valves, rather than the blood flowing back to the heart like it’s supposed to, pressure will gradually build in the veins, causing the veins to enlarge.

The veins most at risk for rupturing are typically located near the ankles and may appear like tiny, bulging, blue varicose veins called venules. They are generally near the skin surface, with the overlying skin becoming thinner and weaker as the vein enlarges. This condition most frequently occurs in the shower because if these venous deficiencies are not identified and treated early, the heat and washing motions from the shower can break the skin and cause the affected veins to rupture, resulting in sudden bleeding from the vein.

What Should I Do If I Experience Sudden Bleeding from the Legs?

The best thing to do in this situation is to apply pressure to the bleeding and seek medical attention. At Miami Vein Center, board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Almeida is highly experienced in this condition and will create a personalized treatment plan that not only treats the affected veins but also takes a preventative approach to keep your veins from rupturing in the future.

There are multiple treatment techniques available at Miami Vein Center for the treatment of insufficient veins, and through regular vascular screenings at our office in South Florida, we can identify signs of venous disease and begin the treatment process before any serious health consequences occur.

Contact Miami Vein Center today to schedule a consultation and have your insufficient veins evaluated before sudden bleeding from the legs and other conditions occur.
