Deep vein thrombosis is a serious medical condition that occurs when you get a blood clot in a deep vein. While deep vein thrombosis can occur throughout the body, it is usually found in the legs. Deep vein thrombosis occurs most often in people that are overweight, smoke and sit for long periods of time. If you do any of these three things, then you need to pay close attention to any possible symptoms of deep vein thrombosis. If you experience any of the symptoms, then you need to seek treatment immediately.

The two most common symptoms of deep vein thrombosis are swelling in the legs pain in the legs from doing normal activities. Less common symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include warm legs, discolored skin, visible veins and fatigued legs. While these symptoms can occur from a wide variety of conditions, they are signs of deep vein thrombosis when they pop up suddenly. If you are experiencing either of these symptoms, then your deep vein thrombosis needs to be treated immediately. Avoiding treatment will only create more problems. One of the most common problems caused by untreated deep vein thrombosis is a pulmonary embolism, which can often lead to death.

At Miami Vein Center, we will run several diagnostic tests to determine if you have deep vein thrombosis. These tests are completely painless, and they usually include an ultrasound, MRI or X-ray. If we find that you have deep vein thrombosis, then we will immediately start treatment, so the problem does not get any worse. Treatment is done to prevent the blood clot from growing, stop it from traveling through the body and reduce your chances of getting another blood clot in the future.

Your deep vein thrombosis can usually be treated using medication, but surgery may be required in serious cases. The first step to treating deep vein thrombosis is taking blood thinners. They will prevent your deep vein thrombosis from worsening, but they will not dissolve the blood clot. We may let your body dissolve the blood clot on its own, or we may give you clot-busting medication. This will require a short stay in the hospital, but it is only needed for large blood clots. Smaller clots will easily dissolve on their own with no complications.

If you have an extremely serious case of deep vein thrombosis, then you will need surgery to correct the problem. The surgery to correct deep vein thrombosis involves placing a small filter in your vena cava. The filter will catch any blood clots while allowing blood to flow normally. You will be able to function normally after recovering from the procedure, and you will never have to worry about blood clots or deep vein thrombosis again.
