Sclerotherapy for varicose veins is a minimally invasive, highly effective treatment that eliminates the discomfort and unsightly appearance of these damaged veins. The basic principle behind sclerotherapy is that a chemical is introduced into the vein. The chemical damages the interior of the vein, causing scarring and closure of the vein. Once the vein has been closed, blood can no longer pool in it, eliminating the symptoms. The body will re-route blood flow to healthier veins, and over time, the damaged vein will be destroyed.

In traditional sclerotherapy, the chemical was simply injected into the vein. The invention of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy has allowed doctors to precisely treat varicose veins in a minimally-invasive fashion.

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy vs. Liquid Sclerotherapy

In ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, the chemical solution that will be injected into the varicose veins is comprised of small bubbles of gas. This shifts the blood so that it can interact with the lining of the blood vessels. Larger bubbles would provide inefficient foam. Also, the foam has the ability to produce an echo signal.

In liquid sclerotherapy, blood weakens the injections, reducing its concentration.

Clinical research suggests that there may be heightened safety with newer proprietary foam preparations.

What to Expect

From the patient’s perspective, there is no difference between the two procedures. Discomfort will be managed and treatment time may vary. A compression stocking may need to be worn for some time after the treatment.

It may be recommended to avoid strenuous activities post-treatment, but, otherwise, patients may be able to return to their normal activities immediately. The procedure is considered safe. Because every patient is different, the doctor will provide aftercare instructions to ensure successful results.
