WHAT IS AN AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY
At Miami Vein Center, our ambulatory phlebectomy procedures safely and effectively remove damaged varicose veins with minimal recovery time. Varicose veins are a common vascular condition that can be painful, cosmetically displeasing and challenging to treat.
Serving the greater Miami area in South Florida, Miami Vein & Wellness is led by board certified vascular surgeon Dr. Jose Almeida. Call us today to find out if an ambulatory phlebectomy is the right treatment for your sider veins at 305-854-1555.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
Typically an outpatient procedure, ambulatory phlebectomy can be performed at Miami Vein Center or at a hospital, depending on patient preference. During this procedure, Dr. Almeida will mark the affected veins with a marker while the patient is standing up, as veins deflate when the body is in a horizontal position.
Once the affected veins have been identified, Dr. Almeida will make small, slit-like incisions in the skin. For larger varicose veins, incisions may need to be slightly larger. Surgical hooks and needles are then used to extract the damaged vein. Incisions are carefully placed and usually result in minimal visible scarring.
Ambulatory phlebectomy is often used in conjunction with ablation procedures that close veins using either radiofrequency or laser technology in order to maximize results. These options can be discussed prior to treatment.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY?
Almost anyone that is unhappy with the appearance of their varicose veins may make a good candidate for ambulatory phlebectomy, but a careful screening must be carried out before moving forward with your treatment.
You and the surgeon will need to confirm a few important details such as the cause of the varicose veins, if any clots exist, and if any other veins need to be treated higher up in the circulatory system. As a general rule, this may not be a good procedure for anyone that cannot walk on their own or put on compression socks.
During your consultation, Dr. Almeida will thoroughly examine the severity of your varicose veins to determine if ambulatory phlebectomy is right for you. You will undergo a full screening to detect any underlying medical conditions before treatment is approved, and factors such as your overall health, medical and family history and personal preferences will be assessed to determine which course of treatment is right for you.

Are there any Risks?
With the proper screening and an experienced surgeon, patients will be glad to hear that there are few risks associated with this procedure, and it has a very high success rate. Some patients experience temporary redness and numbness due to nearby nerves being injured. With the proper aftercare, the likelihood of an infection or any other complications is quite low.
About the Procedure
The specifics of this procedure will depend on the patient's preferences, the amount of veins that are to be removed, and a variety of other factors. Small incisions are made, and the damaged veins are then removed.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?
Due to the nature of this procedure, patients must carefully follow all instructions given to them by their surgeon to avoid any serious complications. After your procedure, compression stockings may be issued to help maintain circulation throughout healing. Bandages may be placed over incisions, but typically no sutures are used for smaller incisions. Temporary bruising and swelling and slight inflammation are common during healing, and any discomfort is typically controlled through pain medication.
Normal daily activities can be resumed sometime after the procedure, and patients may need to wear compression garments at all times.
Doctor Almeida will instruct you on any aftercare instructions for your incisions as well as all possible risks and side effects that may apply to you. Since everyone’s circumstances are different, recovery time may vary. Speak with the surgeon regarding the recovery process and any follow-up procedures.
Although it is possible for new varicose veins to develop in the future, Dr. Almeida will treat your vascular condition at the source to minimize the risk of recurrence or vascular surgery.
