Stage 1 of Venous Disease: What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are superficial blood vessels that develop surface to the skin, which may be red, blue, or purple in appearance. Spider veins are frequently found on the legs and are considered a cosmetic problem.
Spider veins are usually asymptomatic, however they can cause itching, tingling, and discomfort. Treatments are available with sclerotherapy injections or laser. Since spider veins are primarily treated for cosmetic purposes, they are not a covered insurance benefit.
Risk factors include: Genetics, Age, Pregnancy, Birth Control

What Causes Spider Veins?
Spider veins develop due to a combination of genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors that increase pressure or weaken the walls of the veins. Here’s a closer look at the most common causes:
- Heredity: Genetics play a significant role. If your parents or siblings have spider veins, you are more likely to develop them.
- Female Hormonal Influence: Hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause contribute to the development of spider veins. Women using hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy are at increased risk.
- Obesity: Extra body weight places additional pressure on veins, making spider veins more likely to form.
- Occupational Factors: Jobs that require prolonged standing, such as nursing, teaching, and hair styling, elevate the risk.
- Age: The aging process weakens vein walls and valves, increasing the likelihood of spider veins.
- Increased Abdominal Pressure: Conditions like tumors, chronic constipation, or wearing tight garments, such as girdles, can elevate leg vein pressure, leading to spider veins.
Spider Vein Symptoms
Spider veins are often visible as thin, web-like veins that appear red, blue, or purple on the skin's surface. While they are generally painless, some individuals may experience mild symptoms such as itching, burning, or a feeling of heaviness in the affected area.
These symptoms can worsen after prolonged periods of standing or sitting. In rare cases, spider veins may signal deeper venous issues, necessitating medical evaluation.
Spider Veins Diagnosis & Consultation
Diagnosing spider veins typically begins with a visual examination of the affected area by a healthcare professional. To rule out underlying venous insufficiency or other complications, your doctor may use diagnostic tools such as ultrasound imaging.
This non-invasive test helps evaluate blood flow and detect any deeper vein problems. Early and accurate diagnosis ensures effective treatment and prevents potential progression to more severe conditions.
During your consultation, Dr. Almeida will discuss your health and medical history with you to determine which course of treatment is best as well as any potential risks or side effects that could apply to you. Your treatment plan will be created using the least invasive methods and the latest technology, and all vascular treatments are done in-house at Miami Vein Center.
Spider Vein Treatment - Sclerotherapy Options
Treatments are available with sclerotherapy injections or laser. Since spider veins are primarily treated for cosmetic purposes, they are not a covered insurance benefit. Sclerotherapy, or ‘injection therapy’, is the most common treatment for spider veins on the legs. The number of treatment sessions required varies from patient to patient, depending on the number of veins treated, ability to heal, and the level of cosmetic perfection desired.
Modern treatment approaches for spider veins are safe, effective, and minimally invasive:
- Conventional Sclerotherapy: A medical solution is injected directly into the affected veins, causing them to close and gradually fade away.
- Foam Sclerotherapy: This involves transforming the sclerotherapy solution into a foam consistency for enhanced visibility and precision using ultrasound technology.
- Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy: Utilizes advanced ultrasound technology to accurately detect underlying veins and monitor the safe and effective injections of the sclerotherapy solution.
Spider Veins Treatment Pre-op
- The day of your procedure/treatment, shower and wash your legs thoroughly.
- Do not apply any cream or lotion to your legs.
- To avoid discomfort, do not shave your legs on the day of your appointment.
- Bring shorts to wear during the treatment.
- Bring your compression stockings for after your treatment. If you do not have a pair, you will be fitted for one at the end of your first treatment.
- There will be a $75 charge if appointment is not cancelled 72 hours in advance.
Spider Veins Treatment Post-op
- Compression stockings are not mandatory but are recommended to be worn for 1-3 days after the treatment. We recommend 2-3 weeks between each sclerotherapy session for best results. We feel they improve results.
- You will be able to maintain normal activities. Walking is good!
- You may resume strenuous physical exercises to your lower extremities after one day
- Treated areas may temporarily be bruised, tender, slightly red, and swollen. Areas may also have cat-like scratches from the laser treatments. You may apply ICE directly over the site for comfort. In the event of scabbing, do not pick or remove it; you may apply over the counter topical antibiotic or 1% hydrocortisone ointments. These effects are rare and very short in duration.
- 10% of patients may get some temporary brown staining at the treatment sites- these can take up to 3 to 12 months to clear.
- Avoid direct sun exposure until stains have cleared.
What to expect after Sclerotherapy
Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately after treatment.
After undergoing sclerotherapy, patients typically experience mild swelling or bruising around the treated area, which subsides within a few days.
- Your legs will not be cleared with one treatment!
- Most patients need multiple treatments depending on the how clear they want their legs.
Compression stockings may be recommended to support healing and reduce swelling. The treated veins will gradually fade over a few weeks, revealing smoother, clearer skin.
Tips to Prevent Spider Veins
While not all cases of spider veins can be prevented, the following steps can help minimize your risk:
- Stay Active: Regular exercise improves circulation and vein health.
- Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing: Change positions frequently to reduce pressure in your legs.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Reducing excess weight decreases vein pressure.
- Elevate Your Legs: When resting, elevate your legs to support venous return.
- Wear Compression Stockings: These can improve circulation, particularly for those with a family history of spider veins.
Are Reticular Veins the same as spider veins?
Reticular veins, also known as feeder veins, are the dilated blue and green veins beneath the skin surface. They are generally hereditary. Reticular veins can exist independently but can also be the underlying problem that gives rise to surface spider veins. These veins are also considered a cosmetic problem since they do not lead to substantial medical symptoms or complications.
